Facilities

Eight Indoor Courts:
Cherokee's eight indoor tennis courts are surfaced with an acrylic coat that is similar to that used at the US Open, except that the speed of the courts is somewhat slower. This allows players more time to set up for a shot, which in turn makes for longer rallies, resulting in a better workout and more fun!

Four Outdoor Clay Courts:
Our four outdoor clay courts are Har-Tru surfaced and go a step further in terms of slowing down the speed of play. Clay courts are much easier on a player's body because they reduce the wear and tear on the feet, ankles, knees, hips and backs. Weather permitting, we open the outdoor courts before Memorial Day and close them in mid-October, stretching the season as long as possible.

Instruction

Adult Instruction and League Information

Adult League Information

Two adult league sessions are conducted from September through December and January through April. In summer, we take advantage of the weather and schedule a 9-week league session on our gorgeous, outdoor clay courts (link). Members may register for singles or doubles each session, which allows them to adapt their schedules as needed each season.

The biggest advantage of Cherokee's league program is that new members can register for leagues right along with long-time members, thus jumping into the mix immediately. Also, players register for our doubles leagues on an individual basis, so there's no stress of trying to find a partner when you're new to the club. Just sign up and wait for the schedule to arrive in the mail - our rotations are set up so that nobody plays with the same people until they've been on the court with everyone in the league.

Adult Beginner Group Lessons

Open to members and non-members alike, our Adult Beginner lessons are an important element in our effort to constantly bring new players into the game. By offering five separate 7 or 8-week sessions each year, and encouraging players to jump into the middle of a session, we try to accommodate everyone's schedule. Non-members are welcome to participate in two sessions before a membership is required. We offer introductory doubles league to help these members transition into league competition with others of the same skill level.

Adult Drill Sessions

For adults looking to sharpen their game or work on their doubles skills with all four players on the court, we offer group drills with our instructional staff at all times of day. We arrange the drills by level, such as a women's 3.0-3.5 drill or coed 4.0-and-above drill. The focus in most drills is on tactics and strategy, with mechanical stroking adjustments made on the fly. Those looking for more attention to their technique will find private lessons most beneficial. Rates vary depending on the size of the group.

Junior Lesson and League Information

Our objective is to help juniors develop their skills and begin competing as early as possible. Cherokee has earned a reputation for helping develop some of the best players in the state. We also put great effort into improving the play of our recreational juniors who get an early start in the game through our Quickstart, junior lessons and leagues.

Quickstart

The USTA's new Quickstart format provides the tools to help foster the growth of those skills in players as young as 4 and 5 years old. We're excited to have the Quickstart concept - smaller courts, lower nets, shorter racquets and slower balls -- as the cornerstone of our junior program.

Junior Group Lessons

Group lessons for children of all levels and ages are available after school and on weekends, and non-members are welcome in all Tots and Beginners classes. With more than 300 spots available in our junior lessons, we maintain a student to instructor ratio of no more than 6:1, which allows our staff to give plenty of attention to each player on his or her court.

Junior League Information

Junior league play is offered on weekday afternoons and weekends for those who wish to augment their group lessons with singles and doubles match play. Because match play is the best way for players to improve, we try to accommodate as many players as possible. Like the adult leagues, separate fall and spring sessions are conducted, and winners are awarded for both.

Junior Inra/Inter-Clubs

A great way to create more matches for our juniors, as well as to build camaraderie, is to play inter-club matches against clubs from around the state. We try to host or travel to another club on a monthly basis, and if we can't find an opponent, then we'll schedule an intra-club where we break our own kids into two groups and play against each other. Either way, it's always good competition and a fun time!

Private Lessons

Many adult and junior members partake in weekly or occasional private lessons with the many talented professionals on our staff. Players seeking to maximize their game improvement in a minimum period of time will find private lessons to be most rewarding. One-on-one attention allows our pro staff to fully break down a player's strokes and address their most pressing mechanical needs. Scheduling regularly each week allows the pro to book the court in advance, which assures availability. However, if you are unable to come each week, we will be happy to work out another private lesson schedule. Head Professional Tom Chorney is available to assist in scheduling private lessons with the staff.

Events/Tournaments

From in-house junior round robins to USTA-sanctioned events, Cherokee has a tennis tournament for everyone. Our Generation Gap Doubles Open in February is a perennial fan-favorite, with as many as 82 teams playing in recent years. For our introductory level juniors we have two rookie tournaments each fall, and for our more advanced players we have a USTA-sanctioned tournament for boys and girls in every age group in the spring. We also offer mixed doubles events for adults.
